What is skin turgor, and how can it be maintained in a normal state?

In dermatology and cosmetology, the concept of ‘skin turgor’ is used to describe the condition of the skin: its firmness, density, and elasticity. Turgor is responsible for the youthful appearance of the skin and the definition of facial contours. Let's explore why it can decrease and how to maintain it in a normal state.

The primary factors responsible for the firmness and elasticity of our skin are collagen and elastin production, so turgor is influenced by the synthesis of collagen and elastin fibers. Another essential factor is the skin's ability to retain moisture, which is achieved through special substances that capture and retain water, known as hydrophilic. The most well-known hydrophilic is hyaluronic acid.

The main reason for a decrease in skin turgor is aging. As we age, our bodies produce fewer collagen and elastin fibers, and the levels of hyaluronic acid decrease. As a result, the skin's tone and elasticity deteriorate, leading to the formation of wrinkles and sagging due to gravitational effects.

Other factors that can contribute to a decrease in turgor include frequent alcohol consumption and smoking, an imbalanced diet, disrupted sleep patterns, improper or insufficient skincare, a sedentary lifestyle, prolonged stress, and more. It's worth noting that turgor can temporarily decrease due to short-term stress or fatigue.

To maintain skin turgor, you can follow these simple guidelines:

  • Maintain a balanced diet and reduce the consumption of simple sugars.
  • Drink an adequate amount of pure water.
  • Protect your skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
  • Engage in regular physical activity and spend time outdoors.
  • Normalize your sleep patterns.
  • Minimize alcohol consumption, as it can lead to dehydration. Quit smoking, as it depletes vitamin C, which is essential for collagen synthesis.
  • Use skincare products that compensate for age-related decreases in collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, and other hydrophilic agents.
  • Incorporate regular Gua Sha massage into your beauty routine using a Gua Sha plate or roller.
