Peptides: What Are They and How Do They Work?

Peptides are becoming increasingly popular in cosmetics, as they are believed to slow down the aging process and can be a gentle alternative to Botox injections. Let's take a look at how peptides can improve the condition of the skin, what problems they solve, and at what age cosmetics with peptides can be used

What are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that contain from 2 to 50 amino acids. They are the building blocks for cells throughout the human body. Peptides are involved in all processes of our life. They are naturally present in our bodies, but their amount decreases significantly with age.

Peptides are considered one of the most effective anti-age ingredients in cosmetology. They signal to skin cells to synthesize collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. In addition, peptides help stimulate cell division.

How Do They Work and Why are They Needed?

To date, about six hundred peptides have been registered as cosmetic ingredients, each of which acts and affects the condition of the skin differently. For example, low-molecular-weight peptides are able to penetrate the stratum corneum of the epidermis, improve microcirculation, and restore collagen fibers. Most often, peptides are included in the composition of face creams, masks, and serums. Several peptides may be present in one cosmetic product at once.

Peptides began to be used in cosmetics about 20 years ago, and the first was argirelin. To this day, it remains the most famous and popular, and is actively used to correct facial wrinkles. Among the peptides that stimulate collagen synthesis, the most famous is matrixyl-3000.

Functions of peptides in cosmetics:

  • Improve skin tone

  • Accelerate recovery and reduce inflammation on the skin

  • Strengthen the protective barrier, making the skin more resistant to free radicals and ultraviolet radiation

  • Improve microcirculation of blood vessels

  • Retain water in cells, making the skin more hydrated

  • Suppress melanin synthesis, thereby helping to reduce and prevent pigmentation

Features of the Application of Peptides

The effectiveness of cosmetics depends on the concentration of peptides in the product. Low content may lead to the absence of a visible result.

Peptides are not able to give an instant result. Such products are used in courses. As a rule, some results appear a month after regular use. But it is important to understand that peptides are not a magic wand, they are one of the pieces of the puzzle from which high-quality regular skin care should be made up. To achieve the result, your daily beauty routine should include regular cleansing, moisturizing, sun protection and facial massage.

In addition, many types of peptides are destroyed when combined with aggressive ingredients such as retinol, acids and vitamin C. Therefore, it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and not combine peptide formulas with such components.

At what age can cosmetics with peptides be used and are there any contraindications?

There are a large number of varieties of peptides, each of which is aimed at solving specific tasks. When choosing cosmetics based on peptides, be guided by the needs and condition of your skin. If you notice a decrease in skin elasticity, wrinkles, a dull complexion, then you can include products with peptides in your care. Do not use cosmetics with peptides just like that, at a young age the skin is able to produce them in sufficient quantities on its own.

Peptides are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and delicate eye area.
